What Our Patients Say
What to Do in a Dental Emergency
What you do before reaching the dentist may help protect your tooth.
Knocked-Out Permanent Tooth
Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root. If it’s dirty, rinse it gently with water without scrubbing. If possible, return it to the socket without forcing it. Otherwise, keep it moist in milk or a tooth-preservation product. Don’t store it in plain water. Seek care from a dentist or endodontist immediately, ideally within 30 minutes. Don’t wait for an online appointment response or for our office to reopen.
If it’s a baby tooth, do not put it back into the socket. Keep it moist and get to a dentist.
Chipped, Cracked, or Broken Tooth
Gently rinse your mouth and save any broken pieces. If swelling is present, apply a cold compress to the outside of your face. Avoid chewing with the affected tooth and contact our office.
Toothache or Swelling
Rinse your mouth with warm water and gently floss to remove any trapped food. Don’t put aspirin on the tooth or gums; it may burn the gum tissue. Contact our office about persistent pain or swelling rather than waiting for it to worsen.
Lost Filling, Crown, or Bridge
Save the restoration, avoid chewing on that side, and don’t use household glue to reattach it. Arrange a dental evaluation promptly.
Steps for a knocked-out tooth, cracked tooth, and toothache are based on guidance from the American Dental Association and American Association of Endodontists.
What to Expect at a Same-Day or Next-Day Dental Visit
Treatment Options Based on Your Diagnosis
Broken or Chipped Teeth
A small chip or limited area of damage may be repaired with a filling or dental bonding. A more extensively damaged or weakened tooth may need a dental crown. We’ll examine the tooth to determine which treatment is appropriate. To help protect your teeth in the future, ask us about a custom sportsguard or nightguard.
Tooth Pain or Infection
Treatment depends on the cause of the pain or infection. Damage or infection involving the pulp inside the tooth may require root canal therapy. Most root canals are completed here in our office. We’ll explain what we find and the recommended treatment.
Lost Fillings, Crowns, or Bridges
A lost or damaged filling may need replacement. A loose crown or bridge may be recemented or replaced, depending on the condition of the restoration and the tooth underneath.
Teeth That May Need Extraction
If a tooth can’t be predictably restored, an extraction may be recommended. A dental bridge or dental implant may then be considered as a longer-term tooth-replacement option. The emergency visit and tooth-replacement treatment may require separate appointments.
Cost, Insurance, and Payment Options
Self-pay emergency exam: $99, including any needed X-ray, credited toward treatment completed the same day.
The cost of urgent dental care depends on the examination, any clinically necessary imaging, the diagnosis, and the recommended treatment.
We accept credit cards, FSA and HSA funds, CareCredit and Sunbit financing, an in-house payment plan, and an in-house membership plan. After evaluating the problem, we’ll explain the recommended care and provide information about the expected costs.
